Matt,
I used to trigger my flash lights with the build in flash of the camera and than I could chose to use that one just for commander light. I just tested this with a SB-900 in commander mode. Dail the top line M to --- and point the flash straight to where you want. You can see the commander flash in the mirror, but that is all the commander flash will produce. I'm glad I have wireless triggers now, but also glad I can share some budget experience.
