I´m a Nikon shooter and started out with my basic D3000, 2 years ago. It always was a great tool with all manual controls to shoot some cool images, especially with strobist technices.
I recently bought a D600 to step up to the better body with great functions and mainly to get the advantages of the bigger sensor.
My lenses are the 35 1.8G DX(even on FX good results), the 50 1.8G(great standard with good optics) and my workhorse
- the Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM II(sharp, fast focusing, good feeling lens) which I usw mainly for portraits and sports.
For lighting I use Yongnuos 560 I with the Yongnuo triggers and a mid size softbox for even pleasing light to produce some good looking portraits.
I think about getting the new 85 1.8G as well for telephoto pictures with a lighter lens and great optics for a good price.
Other gear:
Sandisk 32GB Cards(fast cards for video/photo which can handle the D600-files)
Eneloop batteries(for all my flash work, love them!)
30" reflector(lighten up some shadows)
colored gels(special effects)
light stands
inexpensive tripod(never use it for camera, only for flashes)
Shot taken with my D3000 + 35 1.8G in window light
-> some parts of my portrait kit.
Why I use my gear:
D600 - great camera with such great sensor performance in terms of color and grain with the High ISO
50 1.8G - a lens everyone should have, so versatile, sharp and nice bokeh blur too
35 1.8G - former standard lens on my DX D3000 Body, now acts as a wide-angle with some vignette
Yongnuo 560 - such a great powerful flash for strobist work in my portrait work
Sigma 70-200 HSM II - my workhorse for portraits -> versatile focal length, great image quality and bokeh
Blackrapid RS-7 - just a great way to leave your camera out of your hands when turning lights etc.
Lightroom 4 + Photoshop CS3 - great products to handle the great D600 files
