My Gear #28 - Petrus Fourie

Sunday, 20 January 2013 11:21

I have to put my school teacher hat on and BEG YOU ALL - if you submit for this series - please please please send in a decent image! All these photographers sending in blurring, dark and poorly framed camera phone shots - it is driving me crazy! Take this as an opportunity to show off your skills - even in a simple gear shot. And secondly - you MUST tell us WHY you use your gear, what you like and what is not up to standard - just a list of 'what I own' is not useful.

OK. Rant over.

Today's viewer gear comes to us from Petrus Fourie in South Africa. Peturs has provided a long write up on his gear - but to be honest it is pretty much a list. Luckily the photo was good! Take it away Petrus...

At the moment I'm focusing on Portraits, functions and events - weddings to follow.

I have one main bag LowePro Pro Runner 300 AW (which is getting very small for all the gear) and a larger plain

bag to hold my stands, fittings and umbrellas (I'm at the moment a strobist). I also have a small SLICK tripod for those

occasions. The gear that I have in the main bag are:

1x ND Grad square filter

1x ND2, 4 and 8 square filters

and a P-type holder for the filters.

My current use for the ND filters are if I'm a situation where I must use fill-in flash for portraits but I cannot get the shutter speed

down to my sync speed of 200 (I'll rather use fill-in flash then ask somebody to hold a reflector for me - but that's just me...). This

seemed like a cheaper option than buying 3 SB700's AND a D7000 to allow hyper-sync with the Pocket Wizards. Although it's not

the best filters, the do the job for me.

1x Pocket note book & pen - for taking people's phone numbers and orders (that you didn't plan for) when you're busy with a shoot

at a function.

3x different size (GB) SD cards - you cannot have enough of those. I have 2 Canon - Selphy printers and they come in handy when shooting

functions (and weddings) and then printing out the "postcard" size photos on the spot.

1x Black Rapid sport strap - for showing off the big guns :)

1x Rocket air blower - a must have for those pesky dust, etc.

1x Micro Fiber Cleaning towel - for the rest of the equipment.

1x Rosco Strobist Collection Gells.

1x Kenko Pro1 Digital Circular Polarizing Filter - For obvious reasons.

1x 50mm F1.8 D Nikon Lens - Great for portraits (although you must manual focus with my camera). It is even a better macro lens

(when cropped in) than the previous Sigma 70-300 macro lens I previously owned.

1x Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 + 2x spare batteries.

I started with the cheap option, but I lost so many good shots so I decided to go for the best.

3x Pocket Wizard Flex TT5.

I normally use 1 to 2 umbrellas for portraits but I included a third flash for rim light on hair, etc.

That's why I decided to include a third pocket wizard.

3x Yongnuo YN560II flash units - You know how good they are (value for money)...

16+ spare AA rechargeable batteries for my Flex TT5 and Flash Units + Charger

1x Spare battery for my camera + Charger.

1x 70-200mm F2.8 VRii Nikon Lens  (a Lens of Orgasmic proportions)

I currently use this lens for most - if not all - of my work.

1x 18-55mm Nikon Kit lens - For the close-up work.

My next lens will be the 24-70mm F2.8 (hopefully they have the VR on that model).

1x Sunscreen - I put some in a small container so that I could fit it on one of the side pockets of my bag.

It has been a life saver a couple of times in the scorching sun.

Last but not least, my Nikon D3100 - Yeah I know, it's the cheapest Nikon DSLR, but it does the job for me.

My next body will probably be the D800 (after the 24-70mm F2.8 - my mouth waters just thinking about this lens).

Thank you Petrus you would like to get involved, PLEASE follow all the instructions here.
