I was eager to get onto this one! I am a amateur, or beginner, whichever you prefer, and I think I have built myself a half decent kit in the last year. Of course there is always room for more, however, I love my kit as it is, and it is catering to my needs at the moment. Once I spend more time fine tuning my art, I will look at the next level of equipment.
I currently carry -
Nikon D90
AF Nikkor 50mm 1.8
AF- S Nikkor 55-200mm
AF- S Nikkor 18-55mm
Multi compartment backpack - ebay brand is called Fancier (LMAO )
Weifang WF-6662A tripod
Hahnel battery charger, which is really cool, cause it plugs in wall/usb/car !
Generic Vivitar flash, as old as the hills, and a ring flash cheapy from ebay - Next investment is a new flash
extension tube
Few ND filters and remote trigger.
I spent just shy of a year looking into to different cameras and spending time on Youtube trawling through reviews etc. I cant really remember what it was that drew me too the D90, but I just simply fell in love with it. I went instore and hand held one and just knew that was the one I wanted. It was destiny.
I started off using the 18-55mm lens, and didn't pay much attention to the 50mm rolling around in the bottom of my bag. I literally had no idea what it was. One day I saw a Youtube vid and was like, oh wait.... pulled it out, and now that is my primary lens mostly. I just love the DOF it gives and I cant imagine not having it after not knowing what it was when I first got it. I particularly love throwing the DOF off centre and shooting through things and creating borders with it etc, its a re-occuring theme, and you can probably see that throughout my galleries. I did use the other two lenses a bit, but have kinda strayed away from them, unless I need to zoom, and focus mostly on my 50mm now.
I haven't really used the flashes much yet, but I got the ring flash, and the extension tubes in hope of bettering my macro photography. That is proving to be a bit more of a challenge, so I am working on that slowly. I rarely use the filters, they have come in handy once or twice, but I am thinking, the need for them will grow as my art does.
I love that backpack! It fits everything in it, and was relatively cheap, along with the tripod, that have definitely served their purpose. I would probably look at upgrading those as I level up in the art. I have used both of those for some of my landscape/beach/night photography, and if I'm only going out wandering I prefer to use my Lowepro side bag.
I also have an Xperia S, which is a 12mp camera in it that is awesome!! My first camera was in-phone, and its what got me into photography. As long as your making the art your desire, then it really shouldn't matter what gear you use!
