My Gear #4 - Erik Månsson

Wednesday, 26 December 2012 22:22

Today's bag comes all the way from Sweeden - and it is all so neatly laid out and organised! When I was 16 years old I couldn't even make my bed - let alone put together such a great display. So tell us all about your Gear Erik...

My name is Erik Månsson, I am 16 years old and live in Sweden. This is my gear, i usually take all of this with me when i do landscape photography and when i'm not in the mood of carrying tons of gear i just bring the camera and the Tamron 85mm. I don't use the Sigma 50-200 very often since i have no need for it, i usually leave it at home. 90% of this gear has been acquired during this last year and has cost me practically nothing. The next buy will be a shutter release for christmas and a camera bag.

1. Yashinon 50mm  f/1.7 (M42 mount): I use this lens mostly for portraits or to shoot objects closer then 1.5m since it does not focus beyond that. The M42 adapter i bought does not provide infinity focus for this lens. it's an excellent lens and i'm very pleased with it, it's in good shape too considering it has been used since the 60s.

2. Nikkor 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 VR: Kit lens that came with the camera. I have to say that even though it's a kit lens, it performs excellent. I get the same quality as wight the Yashinon or the Tamron 85mm. This is probably my favorite lens due to the wide fov it has at 18mm. I mainly use this lens for landscape photography.

3. Tamron 85mm f/2.8 (M42 mount): The other one of my M42 lenses. I like this lens very much and it looks very appealing on my camera. It does produce massive moire and can give you an oldish look to your pictures but the sharpness is great and i like the way the pictures turn out.

4. Sigma 50-200 f/4-5.6 OS: Don't use this as much as i would like to. Great lens but it does not give you much more sharpness then the Tamron 70-300 gives you so i tend to use the Tamron instead. But it's still a good lens for a decent price.

5. Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6: My most used lens, i love it and i hate this lens at the same time. The sharpness at 300mm is not great, it does not have VR so taking pictures with it is a pain even at higher shutter speeds, it looks ridiculous on the camera at 300mm focused to it's closest range of 0.95m, It becomes twice as long and it feels like it's going to break since it's made out of cheap plastic. But i still love this lens, why? Well i paid 150 USD for this lens, i don't have to sneak up on birds to take pictures of them and i can also observe our galactic neighbourhood much better now and photograph it.

6. Homemade Macrolens, made from an old 70-120 Projector lens attached to a tube to give it distance from the camera. Performs great when you consider the shape i found it in, not the sharpest pictures, and focusing with it is a pain since you need to move the lens closer/further away from the subject. The dof is so tiny on this lens you might just get one out of ten in focus.

7. Nikon D3100: This is my camera, it's an entry level DSLR but it works just fine for my needs at the moment. It's also my first camera, I'm 16 and started shooting with it when i was 14 or so and i gotta say that it's a really good, inexpensive camera for anyone looking to get into photography.

8. Battery Grip for the Nikon D3100. The battery tends to run out on me allot so a is a necessity for me since i mostly take photos of wildlife and landscapes.

9. Air blower to remove dust.

10. Lens tissue.

11. Battery charger. Always bring it if my battery runs out and i'm near a source of power.

12. Hama tripod. This is probably the most unstable tripod i have ever tried, but considering i paid 45 USD for it, i'm pretty pleased with it's performance, and it works alright for my needs.

13. Flashlights, great to have when you're out in the woods in the middle of the night.

14. Shoulder bag, it's really my school bag but it works alright, i'm planning on a better, bigger bag soon, made for cameras and not math books.

15. Lowerpro bags. I did not buy these, they came with the camera and the Tamron 70-300. I can only fit two lenses in them or one camera and one lens, they are probably the cheapest bags you can get.

16. M42 Nikon adapter. Since i have two lenses with M42 screw mounts this was the right thing to buy. It has a glass element in it, but unfortunately it does not provide infinity focus for the Yashinon which is a shame. The Tamron 85mm works fine though.

17. Tamron bag for the Tamron 85mm lens.

Thanks for sharing Erik - that is a perfect contribution to Viewer Gear - nice and clear explaination of why and how you use your Gear. I think it is time you replace the tripod though!
