“ Fully support your view. I was using a skylight filter in early film times at the sandy beach. But since DSLR I only have one Pol-Filter and some ND ones - but use them very rarely.
For protection I am always using my lens hood - even indoors, which is a big help at partys, weddings, concerts, with crowded audience. I could not confirm by scientific measurements, but based on basic logic - any filter in front of your very well designed lens will deteriorate image quality ...
