Educating Tina #1 - Choosing a Camera

Featured Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:33

Welcome to Educating Tina - the series where I will teach Tina everything she needs/wants to know to get started as a photographer.

We will be presenting new episodes regularly - covering a discrete topic each episode.

In this opening number, we narrow down choices of camera for Tina to buy - what do you think? Out of the D5200 or D7100 - what would you suggest given her requirements?

More camera buying advice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J3alwaTkpc

PS - yes - the intro is meant to be super lame....

Getting the various cameras in your hand is important. A camera that does not feel right to you is a camera you'll seldom use. Highly recommend getting out to the shop and handling some cameras.

Swivel LCD screen is important for self shots and for video work. If Tina wants to do some of that, D5200 might be the one.

Better build quality is something for those of us who toss their cameras around a lot. Stand out in the rain with our gear. In general, abuse the equipment.

I suggest the D5200 and a couple of good Lenses. The camera itself is excellent and very versatile with many 'high end' features. The D5200 feels good and should be a great camera for Tina to start with.
