I am currently on holiday in france and i saw this japanese older lady taking pictures with her brand new d800 and matching 24-70 f2,8
with her onboard flash. i stood next to her so i could see she was shooting at 24mm. i dare you to shoot with onboard at that distance without the shadow of the lens showing.

but in the end it doesnt matter. she was enjoying herself. and isnt that what photography is all about.

I have the opposite problem i started with a 5100, wish i started on the 7000. As an ametur i suggest 5100, if your keen and have cash 7000, cant go wrong with a 7000, as the starting point. Its just good for learn the profession controls, and having built in controls for flash, awsometown. well thats my 5 cents.

I still love my trusty old D40X, it has never let me down and its metering is often more accurate than the newer and more expensive camera bodies I own.

    Thanks for that.

My intention was to replace my D80 with whatever replaced the D700.
While not a prolific shooter, I was looking forward to the jump in quality offered by Full-Frame. Was slightly disappointed the 800 has 36 mp, but also figure it could last me ten years.

I agree 100%. I sometimes even see people on photography forums going the other way around as well: "Why are you buying that Sigma 24-70, you should be getting the Nikon 24-70, and nothing less!". Not everyone is in it for the money, and not everyone is willing to spend top dollars. In the end, it's all about if you can justify it for yourself (and possibly your wife ;-)). I started on the D90, want to go full frame now, so that will mean saving up for the D800. But if the D600 turns out to be real, then that is more justifiable for me.

Came across your rant via youtube (and agree), and I'd like to point out two things on cost.

Firstly, the amateurs buying "pro" gear tends to bring the cost down, assuming the same rules apply to cameras as to other electronics. This benefits everyone else buying that kit, so it's stupid to complain.

Secondly, I think some people have the idea that you "should" start out with an entry level body and work your way up progressively, something like 1000D -> 500D -> 50D -> 5D (sorry to use heathen Canon on a Nikon forum, but that's what I know ;) . From a buyer's point of view, that's just a waste of money. Corollary: if you intend to end up with a full-frame camera, buying non-full frame lenses also wastes money because at some point you'll stop using them.
